Julie Ann is a native Californian who was born with an internal compass, allowing her to wander about the planet freely. She has traveled the world always trying to 'see what her eye can see.' She earned her BFA in Fashion Design at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles. A freelance illustration job in college led to a 25 year career in swimwear design. Her swimwear designs have been featured in many publications including Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, Cosmopolitan and GQ.
Although digitally savvy, she still starts most projects with a pencil and a blank piece of paper. 'Drawing is so immediate and mobile. I never have to find a battery charger for my pencil.' She loves to draw women and has been profoundly influenced by the works of René Gruau, Alphonse Mucha, Alberto Vargas, Toulouse Lautrec and Ruben Toledo.
In 2014 she launched Feeling Famous Studios out of her home to learn the craft of portrait photography. Her love of classic films and vintage clothing led to an exploration of the photographers behind the studio portraits from the Golden Era of Old Hollywood like George Hurrell and Ruth Harriet Louise. She loves to orchestrate all the sets, costumes, props, hair and makeup to get just the right look for each look. Guided by her mentors in the Photo Artists Network, she has become an award winning photographer.
A proud feminist, she recently showed an art piece titled '#Shedaredto at the Riverside Art Museum as part of the 52 Project. It was a collection of photographs that represented important milestones of the march towards women's equality in the 20th century. You can search the hashtag #shedaredto to see some of these images on Instagram and Facebook.
" All artists have the special gift of seeing the world differently. My personal creative strength has always been a distorted view of reality-my eyes may see something that isn’t actually there - which would be scary for most, but is delightful to me.”
When not in the studio creating art, you will probably find her on a dance floor somewhere because it’s much more fun than the gym. #dancerforlife
